Bill Boone Obituary
A funeral service for Bill Boone, 96, will be held at 2:00 P.M., Tuesday, January 7, 2025, in the Wheeler Mortuary Chapel with Elder Ronnie Montague officiating. Burial will follow in the Portales Cemetery.
Bill R. Boone was born on February 13, 1928, in Vaughn, New Mexico, to the home of Mary Lois (Alexander) and Archie Raymond Boone and passed away on January 2, 2025, in Amarillo, Texas.
His father worked for the Santa Fe Railroad. Bill’s baby sister, Doris Jeanne, joined the family on July 29, 1930. They led a happy and carefree life in this small town in the center of New Mexico. ln 1941, the family moved to Clovis, NM and the children continued their education at Clovis Junior High and Clovis High School. Bill had a paper route and worked at various summer jobs, including sacking groceries for Piggly Wiggly. He graduated from Clovis High School, in May of 1946 and attended George Pepperdine University in Los Angeles, California for four years, graduating in May of 1950. He then served two years in the U.S. Army, stationed at Fort Gordon in Georgia. After completing his time in the armed forces, he moved to Albuquerque and worked there for two years. ln May of 1955 he moved to Clovis where he was hired by the New Mexico Employment Commission. There, he met a young lady by the name of Barbara Ann Meyer. ln June of 1955, they began dating and were married on September 9, 1956, in Clovis. They were blessed with a son, John Bryan Boone, born on July 17, 1959. ln August of 1959, Bill went to work for First Federal Savings & Loan Association. ln January of 1960, he was transferred to the Portales branch of First Federal where he served as branch manager for 26 years. On June 23,1962, Bill and Barbara were blessed with another son, David Raymond Boone. They Lived in Portales until, July of 1986 when Bill, and Barbara moved to Amarillo, Texas, where he worked for the Texas Employment Commission and she worked at Amarillo College. Bill retired in 1996 and Barbara in 2000 after which they travelled extensively in the United States.
Bill was blessed with a good voice, and he always enjoyed singing. He attended a song-leading class at 16th & Pile Church of Christ in the middle of the 1950s and led congregational singing for many years. Bill, and Barbara sang for many funerals and weddings through the years. ln Portales, Bill served as a deacon at 4th Street Church of Christ and as an elder at 2nd Street Church of Christ and at Third & Kilgore Church of Christ. Bill began woodcarving in the 1970s and enjoyed that hobby for many years. He helped establish a woodcarving club in Amarillo. He won many honors with his pieces of artwork carved in wood.
