A family memorial service for Betty Hamilton, 82, of Portales will be held at a later time.
Betty Hamilton was born July 20, 1939 in Roby, TX to the home of Amanda Pearl (Dutton) and Wesley Spears Weems and died on the evening of Sept. 28, 2021 in Portales. The Weems family moved to Portales when she was four years old. Growing up she helped with her mother’s large family garden, and helped at the Pantry, the cafe her mother owned. In her young adult years she worked at Forsson’s Ladies Clothing Store in Portales. She faithfully attended the First Baptist Church with all of her family.
On Jan. 21, 1960, she was married to Douglas Hamilton, a young airman who was stationed at Cannon Air Force Base. After her husband was discharged from the Air Force, they moved to his hometown, Eurica, CA where he worked with his father on a fishing boat. In 1970 they moved to Placerville, CA, and in 2005 they moved to Portales to be near their family. For enjoyment and relaxation, Mrs. Hamilton enjoyed playing her guitar and singing. She was very artistic, and was a talented painter. In addition to her Bible reading, she enjoyed reading a variety of other materials and books as well. She was a devoted wife and mother, and adored her grandchildren and one great grandchild.
She is survived by her son, Tommy Hamilton and her daughter, Carol Ann Stedman of Portales; her six grandchildren, Michael Stedman, Cheyenne Stedman, Alexus Hamilton, Allison Hamilton, Melody Hamilton and Kaiden Hamilton; a great-granddaughter, Alexusann Stedman; and three brothers, Donnie Weems of Ruidoso, NM, David Weems of Roswell, NM and Warren Dale Weems of TX. She was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers, Callen, Hugh, Robert, Gene and Danny Weems, two sisters, Etta Weems Stephens and Deane Levitts, and by her beloved husband, Douglas who died May 21, 2021 after more than 61 years of marriage.
