Obituary
Graveside services for Betty Shirley, 72, of Portales, will be held at 10:00 AM, Sat., Dec. 21, 2019 in the Melrose Cemetery with various family members officiating. All of the Nixon and Shirley families will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Betty Diann Shirley was born Sept. 21, 1947 in Clovis, to the home of Beatrice (Hays) and Byron Dale Shields and died at her home in Portales on Dec. 18, 2019. Her father was transferred by the railroad to Silver City. It wa there that she met William Roy Bevel, Jr.. They were married in 1965. Following the death of her husband in 1986, she moved to Portales in 1988. On Jan. 17, 1998 in the home of Judge Arnold, she was married to Jim Shirley. He also preceded her in death on Mar. 22, 2013.
Mrs. Shirley worked for many years as a home health care worker. She retired in 2011. She enjoyed reading and making jewelry. She enjoyed many camping and hunting and fishing trips with her family. She was a very gregarious lady, and enjoyed countless cups of coffee with her family and many friends.
She is survived by her son, William Ray “Bill” Bevel III of Portales; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Dale and Jolene Shields of Portales and Jerry and Pansy Shields of Wilcox, AZ; three grandchildren, Dustin (Vivianna) Allison, Teresa Allison and Ryan Gillette and Tamara (Justin) Gillette; two great-grandchildren, Jaxon Gillette and Kashlyn Allison; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by both of her parents;a brother, Hal Shields, her only daughter, and Senora Shirley who died in 2007, as well as by both of her husbands.
