PORTALES, N.M. – The Eastern New Mexico University baseball team heads to West Texas A&M University for a three-game series. The Greyhounds will face the Buffaloes for a doubleheader on Thursday, Feb. 11 starting at 1 p.m. and then close out the series with a 12 p.m. game on Friday.

SCOUTING THE BUFFALOES

West Texas A&M opened the 2021 season last week against Oklahoma Baptist and finished the weekend with a 3-1 record. The Buffaloes outscored Oklahoma Baptist 21-13 throughout the series and notched a 4-0 shutout in Friday’s opening game.

Offensively, Reese Patterson leads the way for the Buffaloes with a .545 batting average. He contributed six hits, four RBI, and two runs in last weekend’s games. Cade Engle also added six hits to go with five RBI and a .400 batting average. Eric Ortiz was firing on all cylinders as he recorded four doubles throughout the series.

On the mound, Zach Dixon, Justin Zamora, and Chandler Dean all recorded wins for the Buffaloes. Carter Brown and Chris Rodriguez were each credited with a save.

LAST TIME OUT 

Eastern New Mexico enters the weekend looking to bounce back after going 0-3 in the season’s opening series at St. Edward’s.

Offensively, the Greyhounds were led by Daniel Hunt who finished the weekend with four hits and a batting average of .667. Nicholas Tamez also contributed a total of four hits, while Trevor Moses and Andres Quintana each had two RBI.

The Hounds saw quality innings from several arms throughout the weekend. Cooper Hamilton made his first appearance for ENMU and struck out three batters in 4.1 innings. Damian Acosta also had three strikeouts during his 3.2 innings of work.

NEW HOUNDS CONTRIBUTING EARLY

Several new Greyhounds found success in the first weekend of games to open the 2021 season.

Junior transfer Nicholas Tamez had hits in all three contests against St. Edward’s and scored two runs in Saturday’s close 6-3 loss. He finished the weekend batting .400.

Freshman pitcher Cooper Hamilton saw action in the final 4.1 innings of Saturday’s loss and had a strong showing. He allowed only one hit and no runs, while striking out three batters.
