The Lions jumped on the board first after a pass ball pushed the game’s first run home with runners on second and third. UAFS followed with double to post two runs in the first half inning. The Hounds had to wait until the second inning to get on the board. After Nick Schifftner reached on a walk, Sammy Williamson pushed him to third base on a sacrifice bunt and was able to score after an error from the first baseman, 2-1 UAFS.

Eastern jumped ahead of the Lions in the third frame. Braeton Matthews doubled to put a runner on the bases, and Dax Edmonds drove him home on a two out single to tie the game at 2-2. Cooper Hamilton reached base on a single, setting up Spencer Roach to drive Edmonds home with a single up the middle, 3-2 ENMU.

However, as the game went on the Lions started to heat up at the plate. In the fourth inning, the Lions picked up a run to tie the game at 3-3. In the sixth inning, UAFS took the lead on a two out single to push the score to 5-4, and the next batter singled to take a 6-3 lead over the Hounds. The Lions tore the game open in the eighth frame scoring five runs to take an 11-3 lead. UAFS finished its scoring in the ninth with two more runs for a 13-3 lead.

FROM THE SOURCE

“(Tommy) Perez kept us in it today, but we couldn’t string anything together offensively after putting up a few early,” said Head Baseball Coach Riley Price. “UAFS were tough outs today and sprayed the field well and took advantage of the hitters counts. When we added a few untimely walks and hit by pitches in the mix they made us pay, especially with two outs,” said Price. “Overall, not a bad weekend, but we have some work to put in this week to get prepared for Oklahoma Christian”.

  • Edmonds tied a personal best three hits during the game and registered his sixth multi-hit game of the season.
  • Roach recorded his team leading ninth multi-hit game of the season. Roach has hit safely in his last twelve games, posting 21 hits in that time frame.
  • The Hounds and Lions played their first full series in Portales, N.M. in the history between the two programs.
  • Eastern head to Edmond, Okla. for its next conference series against Oklahoma Christian University. The four-game series is scheduled to start on Friday, Mar. 25, from Dobson Field.
