The Eastern New Mexico baseball team took on Texas A&M International in a doubleheader on Friday afternoon. The Greyhounds swept the afternoon with a 9-4 victory in the first game and close 12-11 win in the second.

GAME ONE: ENMU 9, TAMIU 4

The Greyhounds jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning. With two outs, Nicholas Tamez singled through the left side to get on base. Rio Granger then hit a two-run homer to right center.

Texas A&M International responded in the bottom of the second with two runs to tie the game at 2-2.

Eastern tallied one run in the top of the fourth on an RBI walk from Kian Johnston to take the slight 3-2 advantage.

In the fifth inning, Tamez got the bats going with a single to left field and then Granger walked to put two runners on. Andres Quintana hit a three-run homer to widen the lead to 6-2.

The Dustdevils would not go down without a fight, however as they scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to cut their deficit to 6-4.

Eastern saw Johnston and Camden Matthews get on base with singles in the top of the eighth inning. Tamez then hit a three-run homer to stretch the Hounds’ lead back out to 9-4.

The Hounds held off Texas A&M International through the final innings to secure the 9-4 win.

Offensively, Eastern was led by Tamez, who went 3-for-5 at the plate with a home run and three RBI. Granger finished the game 1-for-1 with a home run and four walks. Overall, the Hounds saw eight student-athletes combine for 11 hits throughout the contest.

Fernando Burgos got the start and the win on the mound. In 6.1 innings he allowed four hits, four runs (three were earned), and three walks while striking out one batter. Liam Sabiston finished out the game with one hit allowed and one strikeout in 2.2 innings to earn the save.

GAME TWO: ENMU 12, TAMIU 11

Eastern once again gained the early advantage with six runs in the top of the first inning, highlighted by doubles from both Braeton Matthews and Cole Luedeking and RBI singles from Matthew Kory and C. Matthews.

The Dustdevils tallied three runs of their own in the bottom of the frame to cut the deficit in half.

The Hounds saw one run in both the second and third innings to make it an 8-3 game before Texas A&M International made the score 8-5 in the bottom of the third with two runs on two hits and two Eastern errors.

In the top of the fifth, C. Matthews started things out with a triple to left field and then rounded home on a B. Matthews single through the right side. Granger hit a sacrifice fly to get B. Matthews across the plate and make the score 10-5.

The Dustdevils continued to battle and saw a two-RBI double from Paris Johnson to make it a 10-7 game in the bottom of the fifth.

Jack Thompson stretched the Greyhound advantage out to 11-7 in the sixth inning with an RBI double.

The bottom of the seventh saw TAMIU come within one run of the lead after a two-RBI double from Matt Kissamis and an RBI single from Ronnie Bailey.

Philip Sanchez then tied the game 11-11 in the bottom of the eighth inning with an RBI double to right field.

In the top of the ninth, the Greyhounds took the slim 12-11 lead. Jude Perea got on base with a single and advanced to second and third after a sacrifice bunt and then an error. Perea scored what would be the winning run on a sacrifice hit from Joseph Holguin.

Eastern held off the Dustdevil offense in the bottom of the frame to secure the 12-11 win and doubleheader sweep.

C. Matthews led the way for the Hounds as he went 3-for-5 at the plate with a triple and an RBI. Granger and Luedeking were both credited with two RBI. Eastern saw 15 hits throughout the contest and six student-athletes registered two or more hits.

Damian Acosta started on the hill and had three strikeouts while allowing seven hits in 2.2 innings. Alex Kuhn came in for the next 3.2 innings and allowed six hits and five runs. Cooper Hamilton finished out the contest with three hits, one run allowed and three strikeouts to earn the win.

The Greyhounds and Dustdevils finish out the series with a 12 p.m. game tomorrow (4/24).
