4/10/2021 | Baseball | Box Score 1 | Box Score 2LUBBOCK, Texas – The Eastern New Mexico baseball team finished out a three-game series with Lubbock Christian on Saturday with a conference doubleheader. The Greyhounds (6-21, 5-21 LSC) fell to the Chaps (11-16, 10-14 LSC) by scores of 17-2 and 18-6.

GAME ONE: LCU 17, ENMU 2 (7 INNINGS)

In the first game of the afternoon, the Chaps wasted no time getting on the board as they tallied five runs in the bottom of the first. George Mendazona had a two-run homer, while Luis Navarro hit an RBI triple and Trevor Andrus had a two-RBI double.

Lubbock Christian saw six runs score in the fifth inning, highlighted by a grand slam from Navarro.

Eastern’s Nicholas Tamez responded with a two-run home run in the sixth to make it an 11-2 game.

The Chaps saw six runs cross the plate in the bottom of the sixth frame to extend their advantage to 17-2 and then shut down the Hounds in the seventh to secure the seven-inning win.

Offensively, Tamez went 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBI and a home run. Jack Thompson, Cole Luedeking, Braet

on Matthews, and Rio Granger all had one hit each.

Cooper Hamilton got the start and loss for Eastern on the mound. Liam SabistonShaun Watson, and William McBride all saw time in relief.

GAME TWO: LCU 18, ENMU 6 (8 INNINGS)

The Greyhounds were the first to strike this time around, as they took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Andres Quintana got things started with a single to right field before he stole second. Quintana rounded third on a Matthew Kory single and home when Camden Matthews put the ball in play.

Lubbock Christian gained the advantage in the bottom of the frame however, after tallying three runs.

Eastern saw three runs of its own in the next frame to regain the lead, 4-3. All three runs scored on a home run by Quintana.

The Chaps had two runs score in both the fifth and sixth innings, followed by five runs in the seventh to make it a 12-4 game.

In the top of the eighth, the Greyhounds cut the deficit to 12-6 after RBI double from both Nick Schifftner and Kory.

Lubbock Christian managed to tally six runs in the bottom of the frame. A three-run homer from Caden Hensley invoked the run-rule which gave the Chaps the 18-6 victory and series sweep.

The Hounds saw 11 hits from seven different student-athletes throughout the contest. Trevor Moses, C. Matthews, Quintana, and Kory all had two hits.

Dalton Thatcher pitched the first five innings and was credited with the loss for Eastern. Damian Acosta and James Romero also saw time on the hill.

The Greyhounds are back in action on Tuesday, April 13 when they return to Portales for the first time this season. Eastern will host Wayland Baptist University for a non-conference doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
