LAREDO, Texas – The Eastern New Mexico baseball team finished out the weekend at Texas A&M International with a close 7-6 loss. The Hounds still earned a series win however, with Friday’s doubleheader sweep.
Eastern got the scoring started in the top of the second inning with four runs to take a 4-0 lead. Andres Quintana was credited with a sacrifice fly, while Matthew Kory sent home a runner on a fielder’s choice and Camden Matthews hit a two-RBI single to right field.
The Greyhounds saw one more run score in the fourth inning. Quintana singled through the right side to get on base and quickly stole second to get in scoring position. He advanced to third after several walks and then crossed home plate on a wild pitch to stretch the advantage to 5-0.
Texas A&M International responded in the bottom of the sixth with four runs to cut the deficit to 5-4, highlighted by a three-run homer from Daniel Quiroz.
In the top of the seventh, Rio Granger took his place at first after being hit by a pitch. He advanced to second on a Cole Luedeking sacrifice bunt and then rounded home after Nick Schifftner singled through the right side to make it a 6-4 game.
The Dustdevils continued to battle and saw one run score in the bottom of the eighth to come within one once again.
In the bottom of the ninth, Texas A&M International got the tying and winning runs on base after an error and a hit by pitch. Ariben Gutierrez then drove both runners home on a single to left field to secure the 7-6 victory for the Dustdevils.
Offensively, both Schifftner and Quintana went 2-for-4 at the plate with one run and one RBI.
On the mound, Dalton Thatcher got the start. He allowed eight hits, four runs (three earned), and three walks with two strikeouts in 7.0 innings of work. Stephen Rausa, James Romero, and Liam Sabiston also saw time. Romero was credited with the loss.
The Greyhounds finish out the regular season at Texas A&M-Kingsville for a three-game series April 30-May 1.
