4/30/2021 | Baseball | Box Score KINGSVILLE, Texas – The Eastern New Mexico baseball team was handed a 13-5 loss by Texas A&M-Kingsville on Friday night.
The Greyhounds took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Cole Luedeking drove in the run on a sacrifice fly.
Texas A&M-Kingsville responded in the bottom of the frame with two runs to gain the 2-1 advantage.
Eastern took the lead back in the top of the third after RBI singles from both Cooper Hamilton and Luedeking to make it a 3-2 game.
The Javelinas regained the advantage in the fourth inning with two runs and never looked back as they tallied three more runs in the fifth.
Texas A&M-Kingsville had a big sixth inning, with six runs on four hits and one Eastern error.
The Hounds needed to score at least one run in the top of the seventh to avoid the contest ending due to the run-rule. With two outs, Eastern managed to load the bases after seeing batters reach on two walks and an error.
Braeton Matthews singled up the middle to send two runs home to cut the deficit to 13-5 and keep the game going.
In the top of the ninth, the Hounds were still looking to rally and managed to load the bases with one out. Texas A&M-Kingsville turned a double play to secure the 13-5 victory.
Offensively, B. Matthews and Luedeking led the way with one hit and two RBI each.
Damian Acosta got the start and loss for Eastern on the mound. He allowed three hits, six runs (one earned), and three walks with five strikeouts in 4.0 innings. Liam Sabiston, Stephen Rausa, James Puga, and Dempsey Battin all saw time on the hill throughout the rest of the contest.
The Greyhounds and Javelinas finish out the series tomorrow (5/1) at 12 p.m.
