Game Recap: Baseball |  | Cameron Brennan

After nearly five hours of baseball and 12 innings, Eastern New Mexico baseball took the first game of the weekend in walk off fashion, 10-9 (12 Inn.), over UT Permian Basin on Friday evening at Greyhound Baseball Field. The Hounds shift to 3-10 on the season, and 2-9 in LSC action. The Falcons fall to 3-15, and 2-15 in LSC action.

The scoring for both teams started in the third inning. The Falcons got on the board first with one run, but the Hounds responded with five in the bottom of the frame. With the bases loaded, Spencer Roach reached on an error sending two runs to the plate, 2-1 ENMU. Eastern loaded the bases again, but this time Nick Schifftner tripled to send all the runner’s home and put the score at 5-2.

The Eastern scoring continued into the fourth inning with two more runs. Andres Quintana scored on a balk and Roach tripled to send the Hounds seventh run home. UTPB didn’t quit, picking up three runs in the fifth frame to make the score 7-5.

The Hounds picked up a run in the bottom of the fifth, after Camden Matthews scored Quintana with a base hit. However, UT Permian Basin stormed back to take the lead from the Hounds. A two-run homer in the seventh and two runs in the eighth, set the Falcons with a 9-8 advantage heading into the bottom of the eighth.

Schifftner again posted an extra base hit with runners on, this time a double to right field scoring Cooper Hamilton, making the score 9-9. However, the runs dried up for both teams over the next three innings. The Hounds had a runner in scoring position in the 9th, 10th and 11th frame but weren’t able to get the them to cross home.

In the bottom of the 12th, a fielder’s choice and two hit batters brought Quintana to the plate with one out. Quintana poked a ball up the middle pushing Schifftner to the plate, as the game ended in walk off fashion, 10-9 after 12 innings.

FROM THE SOURCE

“We had opportunities to put them away early on in the game, it was good to see some fight in us to come away with a hard-fought extra inning win tonight” said Head Baseball Coach Riley Price. “Neither team played a clean game and we have to be cleaner the rest of the weekend on both sides of the ball. Noah (De La Riva) gave us a pretty solid start and we should have cashed in on more scoring opportunities throughout,” said Price. “Really proud of how Will (McBride) coming in late and keeping us in the ball game on the mound until we could get that one run needed to walk it off. Andres (Quintana) stepped up in a big senior moment at the plate and drive in the run to walk it off in the 12th,” said Price.
