The Eastern New Mexico University baseball team earned the American Baseball Coaches Association Team Academic Excellence Award for the 2017 season after posting a 3.178 GPA in the classroom as a team. The Greyhounds were the only Lone Star Conference team to pick up the achievement.

“We would like to thank the ABCA for this honor,” ENMU Head Coach David Gomez said. “I’m very proud of our young men for the success they showed in the classroom. I’d also like to give a special thanks to Brett Merritt and our coaching staff for their efforts in helping our young men accomplish their academic goals. Lastly, I would like to thank our ENMU faculty, Bryan Principe and Stephanie McClary for investing their time in our program.”

The award is given out annually to teams coached by ABCA members that posted a GPA over 3.0 on a 4.0 scale for the 2016-17 academic year. ENMU was one of 34 NCAA Division II teams to achieve excellence in the classroom.

With a 32-18 record, the Greyhounds had the second-most wins and second-highest winning percentage in program history. Additionally, the 22-game turnaround is the second-best in NCAA Division II since 1998.
