SAN ANGELO, Texas – The Eastern New Mexico baseball team finished out a three-game series at No. 13 Angelo State University with a Lone Star Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. The Greyhounds (6-26, 5-24 LSC) fell 5-1 and 19-7.

GAME ONE: ASU 5, ENMU 1

The Greyhounds quickly took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Braeton Matthews led off with a double to left field before heading to third on a Cole Luedeking fly out. Trevor Moses sent B. Matthews home with a sacrifice bunt.

Angelo State (24-5, 19-5 LSC) responded in the bottom of the frame with two runs of their own to gain the 2-1 advantage. Nicholas Novak was credited with an RBI on a fielder’s choice, while the second run crossed on an RBI single from Jordan Williams.

The Rams kept the Hounds off the board the rest of the way while tallying two more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to secure the 5-1 victory.

Eastern saw four hits from four student-athletes throughout the contest. B. Matthews led the way with a double, while Nicholas TamezNick Schifftner, and Jack Thompson all had singles.

Dalton Thatcher got the start on the mound for the Hounds. He allowed five hits and three runs with three strikeouts in three innings. Liam Sabiston finished out the game. He struck out three batters while allowing just one hit and two runs.

GAME TWO: ASU 19, ENMU 5 (7 INNINGS)

Eastern got on the board with one run in the top of the first inning. Luedeking walked and then stole second before rounding home on an RBI single through the right side from Moses.

Angelo State saw a flurry of seven runs score in the bottom of the first, highlighted by two-RBI singles from Novak and Charlie Bartlett.

The Rams then tallied two more runs in the second inning to stretch out the lead to 9-1.

In the bottom of the fourth, ASU saw four runs score on a Aaron Walters two-run homer and RBI singles from Nick Seginowic and Parker Bramlett.

The Hounds cut the deficit to 13-5 in the top of the fifth inning after an RBI single from Luedeking and a three-run home run from Tamez.

However, the Rams answered right back with four runs in the fifth and two in the sixth to extend the lead back out to 19-5.

Eastern managed to get two runs across on two hits in the seventh but it was not enough as ASU picked up the 19-7 seven-inning win.

Offensively, the Hounds saw seven hits throughout the contest. Moses finished two-for-two at the plate with an RBI, while Luedeking was 2-for-3.

Josh Lewis got the start and loss for the Greyhounds on the mound. He allowed five hits and seven runs in the first inning before being replaced by Damian AcostaJason Vasil and Cooper Hamilton also saw time on the hill.

Eastern is back in action next weekend for a three-game series at Texas A&M International. The two teams will meet for an 11 a.m. doubleheader on April 23, followed by a 12 p.m. contest on April 24.
