 The Eastern New Mexico University baseball team finished out a three-game weekend series at St. Edward’s University with a 6-3 loss Saturday afternoon.

The Hounds got the bats going quickly in the first inning and took a 2-0 lead after singles from Camden MatthewsNicholas Tamez, and Trevor Moses and several Hilltopper errors.

However, St. Edward’s responded in the bottom of the first with five runs highlighted by doubles from Blake Holub and Zarian Forde.

In the third, Tamez had his second hit of the game to start the inning. He would end up scoring to cut the Hilltopper lead to 5-3 after a single from Andres Quintana and several walks.

St. Edward’s extended their advantage by one more run in the sixth and then held off the Eastern offense to secure the 6-3 victory.

Tamez led the Hounds at the plate as he went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Trevor Moses and Rio Granger each had an RBI.

On the mound, Damian Acosta was credited with the loss for the Hounds, while Jesse Reed had the win for the Hilltoppers. Acosta struck out three batters in 3.2 innings of work. Cooper Hamilton finished out the game and recorded three strikeouts.

Eastern New Mexico is back in action for a three-game series at West Texas A&M University on Feb. 12 and 13. Friday’s single game will start at 2 p.m., while Saturday’s doubleheader is slated for 12 p.m.
