DENVER, Colo. – Eastern New Mexico women’s basketball saw a balanced attack lead them past Regis University, 71-59, on Wednesday evening at Regis Fieldhouse. The Hounds continue their perfect record, 3-0, while the Rangers were handed its first loss of the season, 2-1.

The Greyhounds started the game with the first four points of the contest, an Iyanna McCurdy layup and two free throws from Natalie Stice. However, that sparked an 8-0 run from the Rangers to take the lead. ENMU slowly cut down the deficit, and regained the lead following a Julia Chavez three-point play after driving to the basket and making the following free throw, 13-12. Eastern would hold a 16-14 advantage after the first frame.

The Hounds controlled the first minutes of play in the second quarter, going on a 13-5 run over the opening six minutes and one second of the period. The scoring streak was started with an Asha Rossthree, and Chavez hitting a three to end the run, giving Eastern a 29-19 lead. Eastern ran the score to 36-24, taking a 12-point lead at the break over Regis.

The home team started the better in the second half, grabbing six points in the beginning of the quarter, to set the score at 36-30 ENMU. At that point, Eastern would control the remainder of the period, outscoring the Rangers 20-4 in the remaining 8:03. The streak started with an Alexsis Johnson basket, then MeMe Amand and Stice controlled the scoring for the Greyhounds. The two combined for 13 points (Stice seven, Amand six) over the rest of the period. With one quarter to play, the Hounds held a 56-34 advantage.

Amand started the final quarter with a layup, giving the Hounds its largest lead of the night at 58-34. From then, Regis mounted a small comeback with time against them. The deficit would be too much for the Rangers, as the Hounds walked away with a 71-59 win over Regis.

  • The Hounds shot 46.7% from the field (28-60), 46.2% from behind the arc (6-13), and 81.8% from the charity stripe (9-11).
  • Eastern controlled the paint, outscoring the Rangers 38-16 in the painted area.
