Clovis, NM – Ninth Judicial District Attorney, Quentin Ray, announced that on July 24, 2024, Damon Martinez, age 41, of Clovis, was sentenced to two years in the Department of Corrections for assault on a jail.

On February 2, 2022, several inmates at the Curry County Detention Center broke off a heavy-duty towel rack and used it to create a hole through the cinderblock in cell # 202.  The hole was the size of a basketball when it was discovered, and concrete was used to refill the hole.  The hole led to an air vent that went directly to the roof.  The amount of damage was $900.00 to the detention center.  The other 4 inmates involved were also charged and eventually pleaded guilty and were sentenced to the Department of Corrections.

The Honorable Benjamin Cross presided over the hearing and sentenced Lopez to two years in the Department of Corrections.

The case was prosecuted by Brett Carter, Special Prosecutor and Martinez was represented by criminal Defense Attorney, Jonathan Miller of Albuquerque.
