The Rosary for Arselia “Sally” Chavez, 90, of Portales, will be at 9:00 AM, Thurs., Sept. 9, 2021 at St. Helen Catholic Church. The Mass of the Resurrection will follow at 10:00 AM with Fr. Francisco Carbajal officiating. Burial will follow in the Portales Cemetery with Joshua Chavez, Angel Lozano, Jonathan Chavez, Michael Sena, Stephen Sena, David Lopez and Ricky Lopez serving as pallbearers.
Arselia Chavez, known to everyone as “Sally,” was born Jan. 4, 1931 at Gonzalez Ranch, NM to the home of Anita (Lovato) and Fermino Lopez, and died on Sept. 3, 2021 in Portales, NM. On Oct. 5, 1953, at Gonzalez Ranch she was married to Alfredo Chavez. They moved to Portales in 1962. Through the years, Sally has worked at several different restaurants in Portales as a server. She was a faithful member of the Catholic church and spent many hours each day in prayer. Sally enjoyed doing word search puzzles, as well as watching Judge Judy on television, and game shows with her husband. Sally was a beloved wife, a devoted mother, a loving grandmother, and a faithful servant.
Sally is survived by Alfredo Chavez, her husband of almost 68 years of their home; a son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Teresa Chavez of Portales; a daughter, Guadalupe Chavez Kennedy and her companion, Richard Gormany of Portales; three grandchildren, Joshua Chavez, Krystle (Angel) Lozano and Jonathan (Monica) Chavez; five great-grandchildren, Noah and Cruz Lozano, Roman Chavez, Imari Rodriguez and Juan Delgado; a sister, Mary Sena of Los Lunas, NM; and two brothers-in-law, Seledon Lopez of Albuquerque, NM and Matias Gonzalez of Gonzalez Ranch, NM. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Richard and Paul Lopez and four sisters, Priscilla Lopez, Genoveva Martinez, Dora Lucero and Rosie Gonzalez.
