Aquaterra Equine is a relatively new business in Portales, but in the short time they’ve been established, they’ve proven to be extremely successful in bringing a much-needed service to an area heavily populated with horses. Kam Knight, owner and operator, opened the doors to the rehabilitation and treatment facility to the public in January of 2017, forming what is today, one of the most premiere locations for all your horse needs.

Boasting both a veterinarian-based and pharmaceutical background, Knight says she recognized the need for such a place to be built, in an area that certainly sees it’s share of “horse traffic”. Aquaterra Equine offers many things for your horse, from their underwater treadmill and laser treatments, to much simpler services that both veterinarians, Dr. Logan Potts of Clovis, and Dr. Amber Fink of Dimmit, perform while on the premises. These may include things like teeth floats, vaccinations, and lameness exams.

Knight says there is quite a variety in the horses they treat. From ranch and rope horses, to race and performance horses, and even an occasional hunter/jumper, there is certainly no discrimination in what’s treated at Aquaterra Equine. The facility can house up to forty head at a time, as most horses undergoing treatment are dropped off and left, while some just haul in for an appointment.

While several services are offered at the facility, Knight says that hands down, the hot laser treatment is their most popular. Adding that Aquaterra Equine is the only place to offer this service within a couple hours, many customers come specifically for that reason. The main advantage, Knight explains, of hot over cold laser treatment (although cold is far more common) is the sheer strength of the hot variation. “It’s a more instant way to treat”, Knight says, “It heals deeper than the cold which does ½” to 1”, whereas the hot treatment does more like 3” to 4” deep”. She also mentions that the treatment speeds up the healing process by sometimes cutting down recovery time by close to half.

A top-notch facility where your horse will receive the very best care under a knowledgeable staff, Aquaterra Equine is in a league of its own when it comes to rehabilitation and treatment. Be sure to check them out for any of your horse needs!
