Alice Louise (Dyer) Griffith February 29, 1936 ~ November 25, 2023 (age 87)

Funeral services for Alice Griffith, 87, of Portales will be held at 10:00 AM, Sat., Dec. 2, 2023 in the Wheeler Mortuary Chapel with Earl Dyer officiating, assisted by Bruce Peck and Donna Richardson.  Burial will follow in the Portales Cemetery.

Alice Louise Griffith was born Feb. 29, 1936, in Mora County, NM to the home of Lilly Evan (Chavez) and Harry Sturgis Dyer and passed from this life on Sat. Nov. 25, 2023 in Lubbock, TX.  The family moved to Portales before she began the first grade.  Alice graduated from Portales High School in 1954.  During her school career, she was active in several plays, and sang in the A ‘Capella choir.  Following graduation, she worked at the Portales Daily News.  Later, Alice worked at J. C. Penney’s, Sprouse Reitz and the Spic and Span Cleaners.  On Saturdays she cleaned houses for various people.

On Dec. 22, 1957, she was married to David Griffith.  For the next 32 years, they moved several times to construction sites in various states where her husband was employed.  In 1989, they returned to Portales to assist in the care of her parents who were in declining health.

Alice enjoyed sewing and doing interior decorating and landscaping.  She was always up for a garage sale, and she enjoyed reading almost anything.

She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, David Earl and Robin Griffith and Damon and Amie Griffith of Portales; four daughters and sons-in-law, Davina and Gary Jaynes of San Antonio, TX, Donna and Chris Richardson of Hammond, LA, Dodi and Luther Eakins of Portales and Desiree and Brody Marlow of Rio Rancho, NM; twelve grandchildren, Nathaniel (Samantha) Griffith, Sarah (Eric) Martinez,  Emily Griffith, Jaclyn Richardson, Davina Jaynes, Zi Eakins, Rhia Eakins, Anja Eakins, December Griffith, Selwyn Griffith, Harry Marlow and Eulalie Marlow; and one great-grandchild, Emmit Martinez; a brother, Earl Dyer of Phoenix, AZ; and two sisters, Irene “Ma” Peck of Phoenix, AZ and Ida Denny of Oregon City, OR.  She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Harry Dyer and four sisters, Lilly “Major” Moore, Lucy “Sissie” Metcalf, Mary Irwin and Nellie Dyer, and by her husband, David who died Feb. 24, 1996.
