PORTALES, N.M. – The Eastern New Mexico Athletics department recently announced the hiring of Zac Alfers as the department’s new Sports Information Director.

Alfers will serve as the primary contact for men’s and women’s soccer, women’s basketball and softball, as well as the secondary contact for the football program. He will replace Ryan Shumaker, who was recently promoted to a new Assistant Athletic Director for Marketing, Events and Sports Information role within the athletic department.

“Zac will be a great addition to our department and has shown proven success during his time at Humboldt State,” Shumaker said, “His peers had nothing but great things to say about him and we couldn’t be more excited to welcome him aboard our team. His experience and people skills will be vital as we look to continue to build upon our sports information department here at Eastern New Mexico.”

Prior to ENMU, Alfers spent the last four years as the Sports Information & Communications Specialist at Humboldt State University in Arcata, Calif. In that role, Alfers served as the primary media contact for women’s soccer, men’s basketball and softball and also served as the secondary contact for football, men’s soccer, women’s basketball, and women’s rowing.

“I am very excited to accept this position and extremely eager to get to work,” Alfers said, “I would like to thank Mr. Shumaker and the rest of the hiring committee for this amazing opportunity. It’s an honor to be at Eastern and I am very grateful to be apart of the Greyhound family.”

During his time at Humboldt State, Alfers was responsible for coordinating statistical reports, post-game interviews, and producing game-day publications. Alfers was pivotal in creating the program’s first gameday manuals and continued to sharpen his skills in journalism and story development. Alfers has proven leadership capabilities as he was responsible for the training and supervision of student workers while providing operational support to the HSU athletics office.

Prior to his involvement with the sports information office, Alfers walked on to the football team at HSU in the spring of 2013 before his playing career was cut short due to a knee injury. Alfers graduated with a degree in Business Administration from Humboldt State in 2017.
