Obituary
The Rosary for Abelino Lucero, 95, of Portales, will be recited at 1:00 PM, Mon., June 8, 2020 at St. Helen Catholic Church. The Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 2:00 PM by Fr. Francisco Carbajal. Burial will follow in the Portales Cemetery with JoJo Madrid, Steve Garcia, Jr., Toby Garcia, Danny Lucero, Lorenzo Lucero and Ty Garcia serving as pallbearers. Due to the current restrictions on large gatherings, attendance in the church will be limited. However, the Mass and the Rosary as well as the graveside rites will be live streamed for the benefit of those not able to attend in person.
Abelino Lucero was born May 1, 1921 in Anton Chico, NM to the home of Jesusita (Romo) and Camilo Lucero, and died early on the morning of June 4, 2020 in Portales. Mr. Lucero was a farm laborer all of his working life. At home, he enjoyed doing repairs around the house and building various things. He liked to decorate his belts, and collected knives. Among the various crafts he enjoyed was making whips. Mr. Lucero often played his guitar, and he liked spending time with his family.
He is survived by two sons, Leon Lucero of Portales and Sammy Lucero and his companion, Angie Garcia of Memphis, TX; four daughters and sons-in-law, Maria Librada and Esteban Garcia of Portales, Adelina and Ernest Villanueva of Portales, Antonia and Martin Zamora of Winnemucca, NV and Stella and Joe Madrid of Portales; 13 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and 27 great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Manuel, Bone and Petro Lucero, six sisters, Aurora Lucero, Carmen Graston, Elvira Castillo, Amelia Moro, Alicia Lucero and Emelia Rodriguez; and two sons, Lorenzo who died as an infant, and Fred Lucero who died Oct. 1, 2018.
